Today’s conventional fiber sand often contains microplastics and harmful synthetic materials, which pose serious risks to both the environment and human health. These materials are already under regulatory scrutiny and will be banned by 2031 under upcoming EU legislation.
Equestrian Wool Arena – EWA, is developing a sustainable, high-performance fiber sand surface for equestrian sports – ideal for both show jumping and dressage.
WOOL IS THE SECRET SOLUTION.
EWA has developed a specialized 100% wool fiber that makes sand elastic, improving performance, stability, and comfort for the horse.
The fiber is fully biodegradable, adds natural nutrients back to the soil, and makes use of a wool by-product that would otherwise go to waste.

TESTS IN SAND.
Testing of Equestrian Wool Arenas has been conducted in collaboration with Lars Roepstorff, Professor at SLU and Axfoundation. Initial trials evaluated various biodegradable materials, with wool emerging as the most promising solution. Further development led to refined wool variants and the creation of a wool + sand formula, first validated on a smaller scale and now implemented in our first full-scale arena for continued testing and evaluation.
LARGE SCALE TESTS.
EWA iNSTALLS riding arenas FOR LARGE SCALE TESTS in partnership with Trädgårdsteknik, a professional arena construction company.
Systematic testing will be conducted in collaboration with Lars and his mechanical hoof to ensure objective performance evaluation. Parallel to this, EWA will continue the necessary product development to further optimize performance and long term sustainability.

SUSTAINABILLITY AWARD.
The Lövsta Future Challenge & Gothenburg Horse Show Sustainability Award is presented annually to recognize outstanding initiatives and innovative solutions that promote sustainability within the equestrian industry.
For the 2026 edition, the award was presented to Equestrian Wool Arena (EWA) for its work in developing riding surfaces based on wool and sand.
